Gent ist nach Antwerpen die zweitgrößte Stadt Belgiens. Sie ist zugleich die Hauptstadt der Provinz Ostflandern und des Arrondissements und Wahlbezirks.
Gent entstand aus keltischen Ansiedlungen im Gebiet des Zusammenflusses von Schelde und Leie. Im Mittelalter wuchs Gent durch den blühenden Tuchhandel zu einer der größten und bedeutendsten Städte Europas heran. Auch das Flachs- und Leinengewerbe und das von der Stadt erworbene Stapelrecht auf Getreide trugen ansehnlich zur Wohlfahrt der Stadt bei. Nach einer kurzen calvinistischen Periode verfiel die Stadt zusehends bis zur erneuten Blüte gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts, als Gent zu einer der ersten industrialisierten Städte auf dem europäischen Festland wurde.
