Next to the church of Schiplaken is a monument by Bernard Callie. It stands at the entrance of the cemetery. Here are buried 91 soldiers and officers who died during the battle of Schiplaken during World War I. From 20 August to early October 1914, the enemy troops stayed in Schiplaken under constant advance and recoil. Several battles took place, but the most important were the battle of 26 August and that of 12 September. The first battle caused about a hundred deaths in the parish. Of these, 91 soldiers and officers were buried in the parish cemetery, others were taken by their families. The ship's population also suffered a great deal from the fighting, both materially and physically. Several buildings, including the church, the presbytery and the castle Terlinden, were damaged.
