De opvallende wereldbol watertoren van Bierbeek, ook gekend als de watertoren op Bovenheide, kwam in juli 2011 in het nieuws toen er een dode duif in het water gevallen was. Het resultaat was dat het drinkwater niet drinkbaar was voor tal van gemeenten die deze watertoren voorziet van water. De bolvormige watertoren heeft een inhoud van 500 m³ en is 29 meter hoog, de talloze antennes op de koepel niet meegerekend... Hij bedient naast Bierbeek ook Pellenberg-kliniek, een deel van Kessel-Lo (Trolieberg), Lubbeek (hoog net), Blanden, Haasrode en Lovenjoel.
