The oldest part, between the tower and the present-day church, dates back to 1225. The present church was built in the 14th century because of the increase in the population. In 1725 the nave, the aisles and the transept were pulled down. The ruined spire was also pulled down. At the top of the 43 m high tower tourists can enjoy a marvellous view. Inside the church gothic statues of the apostles can be seen in the nave. There are also baroque altars and confessionals. The miraculous Holy Cross is worshipped in the church. The tombstone of Jacob van Maerlant was regarded as Tijl Uilenspiegel's until the 17th century.
