In 1949, the Belgian photographer Roland d’Ursel did a photo feature of Magritte, set in his house on Rue Esseghem. He’d anticipated the international fame which would greet the surrealist painter in the 1950s.
This young photographer also took portraits of other artists who would later become famous, like Delvaux and Alechinsky. His pictures, which are a unique insight of the Magrittes’ original apartment, proved very useful to recreate it.
