Balegem

'Balegem stone' is a concept in the history of architecture in Flanders. It was mined in the Land of Aalst and especially in Balegem. The use of this soft stone - from the family of Ledian sandstone - revived strongly in the 12th century to reach a peak in the Gothic period. In the 19th century, the quarry was revived, thanks to road works and, above all, thanks to numerous restorations. The quarry is currently operated by the Verlee family and is definitely worth a visit (to be requested!). It goes without saying that many recent monuments in our region liked to use these whimsical giant stones with their warm color!
