Menen Wald (‘Menen Forest’) is the largest military cemetery on the European continent, and the final resting place of 48,049 soldiers. After the war, the many German cemeteries behind the front line were combined into four large war cemeteries. Two of these are in the Leiestreek. In addition to Menen Wald, there are also the Soldatenfriedhöfe (‘military cemeteries’) in Hooglede, Vladslo, and Langemark.
