Just before the Geuzen seized Lede on 8 May 1581, they had already taken the castle. According to Boon's Geuzenboek, the conquest was relatively easy, because the soldiers defending the castle offered little or no resistance to the advancing Geuzen troops. At that time, a large number of Ghent troops had joined the Beggars' troops.
