As you can see from the exterior of the Sint-Denijskerk, the church was rebuilt and expanded several times. Excavation works confirm that there was already a church in the 12th century. The Romanesque church was enlarged around 1400 and provided with the current tower. The south aisle, which is architecturally distinctly different from the rest of the church, was added in the 18th century.
The patron saint of the church, Sint-Denijs, is usually depicted very specially, namely with his head in his hands. The saint was martyred by beheading. He was not satisfied with his cemetery after his death, so he took his head and went to his chosen spot in Saint-Denis in Paris. In the church of Kalken there is a triptych that depicts the turbulent life of this saint.
