Here in the Church of Our Lady St. Peter, the funeral service for cyclist Wouter Weylandt was held on May 18, 2011. The service was attended by many prominent cyclists. In St. Peter's Square, the service was broadcast on a large video screen for all supporters and acquaintances who could not enter the church. On 9 May 2011, during the third stage of the Giro d'Italia, he suffered a fatal fall during a descent of the Passo del Bocco. Weylandt got caught with his pedal behind a wall, after which he fell and slid twenty meters over the asphalt. After many attempts to resuscitate him, the Giro doctor confirmed that he had died. Later it turned out that Weylandt died immediately as a result of a skull fracture. His girlfriend An Sophie was five months pregnant with their first child at the time. She gave birth to a daughter on September 1.
