European masks. A living heritage
 
The institutions preserving and studying intangible heritage, and in particular masking traditions, have been nourishing for quite a while a reflection on the very nature of their field of competence: in their role as museums they display objects which are witnesses of the intangible and open a window to something that cannot be shown in a showcase: actual experiences, the invisible - in other words, the intangible.
 
This publication presents the reflections resulting from the European project IMMASK “Museums & intangible heritage – focus on European masking traditions” which unites five European museums. The international Carnival and Mask museum (Binche, Belgium), the museum of Mediterranean Masks (Mamoiada, Sardinia), the Carnival museum Narrenschopf (Bad Dürrheim, Germany), the national Village museum Dimitrie Gusti (Bucharest, Romania) as well as the centre of Masks and gestural Structures and the international museum of Mask Amleto and Donato Sartori (Abano Terme, Italy) have shared their experiences in developing strategies to illustrate living heritage in their institutions and to offer their audiences a genuine, true picture of intangible heritage in general.
 
This project has also given rise to an exhibition inviting the visitor to discover masks made in Europe, highlighting both their originality and their similarities. Spotlight on the “intangible cultural heritage”of our continent. This publication contains the main ideas of this exhibition.
