St. John the Baptist Church

The Church of St. John the Baptist is a Brabant Gothic building built in 1470-1480 on the plan of a Latin cross. Composed of three naves and a choir with a three-sided polygonal apse, the church is covered with ribbed groin vaults with double arches. Commissioned by the Abbey of Affligem, the decimator of the parish, the church was built mainly with local sandstone. The building was ransacked in 1489 and was the victim of successive fires in 1568, 1582 and 1604. This was followed by a campaign to restore the building, mainly the tower and vaults. During this restoration, brick and white stone from Gobertange were used. The church had a spire bringing the total height of the building to 40 m, but this was lost during a fire in 1695. The choir was modernised in 1965-1966 with the addition of a high altar made of blue stone from the Ourthe. In the 1970s, 16th-century murals were found in the arms of the transept. To the south, they depict Saint Guidon. The façade is pierced by a semi-circular arched door in the Renaissance style, surmounted by an ogival window with tracery. Note the organs installed in the church in 1844-1845 by the organ builder H. Loret.
