Natuurgebied De Blankaart, Diksmuide

The nature reserve De Blankaart near the village of Woumen is the heart of the floodable IJzer valley. It is a regular paradise for a large number of – often rare – bird and plant species. At one time, De Blankaart was the natural habitat of the otter. Nature conservation organizations are making great efforts to get the otter back into the IJzer valley. Free admission to the hiking trails and the bird spotters huts. The Visitor Centre De Otter forms the entrance to De Blankaart. In the castle, you will become acquainted with the wildlife and the users of the IJzer & Handzame valley.
The otter takes you on a tour through a mysterious world of water, cane, wet grasslands and marsh forest, fishing, hunting, the ‘broekratten’ and agriculture.
Open visitors center : on weekdays from 9 am to 4:30 pm; on weekends and public holidays from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm (closed from 24/12 through 01/01). Free admission.
