Flemish invention for water storage and nature

This lock lets in part of the tide at every high tide, creating rare freshwater mudflats and salt marshes. At low tide the water flows back to the Scheldt. By the way, did you know that a controlled flood area with reduced tides, such as Bergenmeersen, is a Flemish invention? The concept was developed ten years ago at the University of Antwerp. The construction of this lock was preceded by a thorough study so that exactly the right amount of water flows in at high tide.
