In 1902-1903, Maurice Calmeyn started planting 55 hectares of forest in the dunes of De Panne. He wanted to show that it was possible to plant trees close to the sea. Calmeyn had in mind the luxurious and successful seaside resort of Paris-Plage (France) with his afforestation plans. The largest part of the Calmeyn forest (46 ha) now belongs to the Intermunicipal Water Supply Company of Veurne-Ambacht (IWVA). The forest is freely accessible via the hiking trails.
