As early as around 600 AD there would have been a chapel in the hamlet of Steenbergen, and in 877 part of the area came into the possession of the Abbey of Nivelles. That is why the parish church was dedicated to Saint Gertrude. In the late Middle Ages, a place of pilgrimage of this saint arose here. The peak of this devotion took place in the 17th century. Water from the St. Gertrude's well there, and soil from the cemetery, were said to have been an effective remedy against rats and mice. A tombstone of feudal lord Hendrik Van der Galen (Hof Vander Galen) and his family lies in front of the main entrance.
