The Roeselare-Leie canal was the artery of local industry at the start of the Twentieth Century. And industry suffered a lot during the occupation. The Germans carried off much of the machinery and equipment, and many businesses were destroyed by bombardments. Despite that, Roeselare was still a hive of activity during the occupation. After all, the canal was fully incorporated into the war economy.
