Description by the author

Liège (old town), the Citadel and Bâneux:
We start the walk at Place Xavier Neujean. Along the Boulevard de la Sauvenière, there are plenty of parking spaces for those going by car. We cross the boulevard at Place Verte and go up a little on the other side to Rue de la Montagne. Here we climb the first steps of our "stair tower". At the top, we follow Saint-Hubert Street and Ste. Croix Street (after the collegiate church). Then we cross the railway where the old Palace station was located. Behind the bridge, we turn right into Rue Volière. Here we find ourselves in a different world. It is 1 of the oldest districts of Liège stuck against the Sint-Warburgisheuvel. Along the rue de Pierreuse, we go back down to the bishopric. But we don't go that far. At number 38, we enter the maze of stair paths of the Terrasses des Minimes. We follow the green arrows for a while. Finally we arrive at the bottom of the Mountain of Bueren. Those who make the walk should read the history of the 600 Franchimontais (15th century) in advance. This way you immediately know who this Bueren was, after which the 374 steps and the "mountain" are named. Upstairs we are in the Au Pérî district. We pass in front of the monument of the 14th Line Infantry Regiment where we can admire the first beautiful panorama of Liège. Then we more or less follow the Citadel wall (with an additional panorama!) beyond the football field. After the first row of houses, we turn right and return to the stairs. We go down a bit and find ourselves in a rural area. However, we are only 250 to 300 m from the city as the crow flies. Here we also have a very nice view of the slag heaps of Herstal. At the top, we pass 2 chestnut trees of exceptional beauty. The hill on which we are located is also partly a slag heap of the old coal mine of Bâneux (or Banneux) where coal was raised. Among other things, coal gas and tar were extracted from it. When you have descended, you will pass signs with the necessary explanations. You will also pass the closed entrances of the mines. The bodies of the two murdered half-sisters Nathalie and Stacy were found nearby in 2006. Fortunately, we don't pass through it as we turn right down the hill and walk parallel to the railway tracks for a while. Above us is the rue du Bâneux. The place is somewhat reminiscent of L.P. Boon's "forgotten street". It forms a world in itself. Here we cross the railway. At the bottom of the bridge we turn left. We follow the tracks again, turn right and... suddenly find themselves in town again. The building with rusty steel plates on your left is "l'Atelier", the cultural artery of the Saint-Léonard district. We turn right into Vivegnis Street and walk to St. Leonard's Square. This square forms the transition between the poor district of Sint-Leonard and the city of Liège (Hors-Château district). In the rue Hors-Château it is really worth visiting the alleys (right side). These dead ends form islands of peace before returning to the burning city. We will pass in front of 'le Perron', the monument of Liège, for a long time. In front of this column we take the rue de la Violette. There we meet 'the house of Peket', a tavern where the juniper of Liège (peket) can be tasted (and bought) in all possible flavors. Cheers!
