William Tell died in 1354 while trying to save a child from drowning in the Schächenbach. A fresco in a chapel in Bürglen, which dates to 1582, depicts this scene.

The Schächental is an alpine valley of Uri, Switzerland, formed by the Schächen river. The valley stretches to the east of Altdorf for some 10 km.
