The Basilica of El Escorial is a temple of Catholic worship that is part of the set of the Monastery of El Escorial, in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid, Spain, which was part of the Archdiocese of Toledo. It was conceived as the center of the monastic complex and a place of commemoration of the deceased kings of Spain. The title "Basilica" is obtained by prerogative of the Pope. Thus, in a liturgical sense, basilicas are all those churches that, because of their importance, their historical circumstances, or aspects of a certain importance, obtain that papal privilege. In addition, tradition demanded that it be raised over the burial place of a martyr.
