Puerta de Palmas, formerly Puerta Nueva, is a monumental access gate of the wall that surrounded the city of Badajoz, located in front of the Puente de Palmas. The completion of its construction dates from 1551. It is one of the most representative monuments of the city. This monument is one of the little that remains of a fortified city that needed its walls to defend itself in past centuries. In the seventeenth century another door was opened in front of the bridge of the Autonomy, near the Hermitage of the Little Birds[1] and changed its name from Puerta Nueva to Puerta de Palmas. This door is composed of cylindrical towers that flank a passage arch with a Renaissance trace on the outside. The uses of the Puerta de Palmas has changed over time and although it is now mostly a roundabout it has been from a surveillance point to an accommodation or even a prison. [2] For a long time it also maintained a function as a fortified access point to the city, and later of control for customs and fiscal purposes. [3]
