THE BATTERY OF LEFFRINCKOUCKE
This military building, whose first elements date back to 1778, was fortified in 1879 by the Navy. A structure of the Séré de Rivières system, built entirely of yellow bricks, the Leffrinckoucke battery, also known as the Eastern or Zuydcoote battery, was in charge of the defence of the maritime pass. During the Second World War, the German occupiers reinforced the position and integrated it into the Atlantic Wall.
