The Abbey of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre, also known as Saint-Pé de Geyres or Saint-Pé de Génerès, is an old Benedictine abbey, downgraded to a parish church, in the village of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre.
The abbey was founded in 1022 by some monks from Saint-Sever-de-Rustan: belonging to the order of Cluny, it quickly gained importance as it was located on the way to Santiago de Compostela. The entire complex was consecrated in 1096 to St. Peter and Paul, just like the abbey of Cluny, and underwent major enlargement works during the twelfth century. The monastery was strongly affected by the negative impulse of the wars of religions and was sacked in 1569: to this event was added a violent earthquake about a hundred years later, precisely in 1661, which seriously damaged the structure, also causing the collapse of the dome of the transept; The abbey was rebuilt in a more modest form between 1676 and 1681. On 7 September 1977 it was downgraded to a parish church and in 2002 it was declared a historic monument.
