The church of Santa Maria Maddalena is a place of Catholic worship located in the municipality of San Lorenzo al Mare, in via alla Chiesa, in the province of Imperia. The church is the seat of the homonymous parish of the diocese of Ventimiglia-San Remo.
The owner of the church is not St. Lawrence, as one could easily guess from the name of the place where it is located, but St. Mary Magdalene. This is because one of the many legends about the saint tells that during the journey from the Holy Land to Provence, the Magdalene would have stopped on a rock right in front of San Lorenzo Al Mare, where, according to legend, she would have stopped to pray. The rock, called Santa Maria Maddalena, was submerged in the sixties of the twentieth century during the construction of the municipal port.
