The Naardertrekvaart is located between Muiden and Naarden. The canal was dug in six weeks in 1641 and cost approximately 240,000 guilders. The costs were borne by Muiden, Naarden and Amsterdam. A regular barge service was maintained on the canal for two centuries. With the arrival of the railway and a tramway at the end of the 19th century, migratory shipping lost its status as a transport route.
