Delphine

The Delphine only got its name in 1952 when a Frenchman bought the mill. Before that, this windmill from 1874 was called the Oostzijdse molen, because it pumped the polder of the same name. The mill became famous because Piet Mondrian painted it 20 times between 1902 and 1908. The polder dike on which the mill was built became a line dike when the Old Dutch Water Line was set up in the early 18th century. This water line ran from Muiden to the Biesbosch and was a defense system in which large parts of land from the river were flooded by means of a network of locks, dams and other waterworks. The higher and therefore vulnerable places such as dikes or locks were defended by batteries, redoubts or forts. The line dikes along the Gein were protected here by two line batteries, built between 1808 and 1810: one around the mill and one on the west side of the river, on your left.
