Elsterberg

Source: Groenehartstocht

With a height of 62.5 meters, the Elsterberg belongs together with the Amerongse berg (69 m) and the Galgenberg (50 m) to the highest peaks of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The mountains originated in the ice age, when a large glacier pushed layers of sand southward in front of it. As it warmed, the glacier melted and the water made its way to the edges of the moraine. The water eroded deep valleys into the subsurface and this is how the meltwater valleys were created. The Elsterberg and the Amerongse Berg have become quite high by Dutch standards, because the moraine was pushed up again by another glacier.
