The Infopunt Zwaakse Weel on the Zwaaksedijk near Kwadendamme is not large, but it is informative. It shows how the Zak van Zuid-Beveland came into being. Turning a wooden disc makes it clear how our ancestors won the 'Beveland' from the sea over a period of ten centuries. Little by little, the land was diked from 1300 onwards, from 1500 onwards it was reclaimed on a larger scale, and sometimes - out of necessity - returned to the sea. The St. Elizabeth's Flood is a well-known one from the distant past: in 1421, the farmers of the region lost their farmland in one fell swoop. Also in 1953, the area suffered as a result of several dike breaches.
