The Lateral Canal is located between Linne and Buggenum and has a length of 8.9 km. This canal cuts off a number of large meanders and therefore offers a shorter and faster route compared to the original Meuse route. Shipping only has to pass lock Heel via the canal and two locks via the Maas, namely lock Linne and lock Roermond. The canal was built in the mid-sixties.
Between 2004-2012, two retention basins (overflow areas) were constructed to the west of the canal to collect part of the then abundant water of the Meuse and the Lateral Canal at high tide. At high tide, the water from the Meuse and the Lateral Canal begins to enter these basins via an inlet (lowered quay). As a result, the water level in the Lateral Canal and the Meuse drops.
