Ruins of Eyckholt

Source: Natuurmonumenten

The name Eyckholt appears in the archives since 1385. The castle was then owned by the Van der Lynden van den Eyckholt family. Holt is another word for forest. The castle must have stood near an oak forest in the past. In the 18th century, the castle slowly fell into ruins. In 1739 the main hall was still used as a threshing floor.

What we can still see today are the remains of a round wall and the corner of a tower. Thick walls betray its medieval origins.

Natuurmonumenten wants to preserve the romantic appearance of the ruin and has therefore restored the remains with restraint. During a walk through the varied nature reserve Terworm, there is plenty to muse about the mysterious ruin and the knights in the oak forest.
