Groenestein

Groenestein is a former castle and knight's court town near Langbroek, in the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede in the province of Utrecht. The castle was probably built between 1377 and 1414 by William the Knight of Groenestein, a knight who fought in the Arkel Wars in 1405 in the retinue of the bishop Frederick of Blankenheim.

Groenestein consisted of a complex of buildings on a moated square site, accessible on the east side via a drawbridge. It contained a separate moat forecourt. Between 1749 and 1760 it was extensively converted into a country house . In 1802 the property went to Anna Wilhelmina Baroness van Lynden, an unmarried sister of the lord of Sandenburg. This Baroness Van Lynden died unmarried in 1847, after which the estate was annexed to Sandenburg. Groenestein Castle fell into disrepair and was probably demolished in 1862. The property is currently part of the Sandenburg estate. Most of Groenestein has disappeared, only the gatehouse and part of the canals remain.
