Amsterdam-Rhine Canal

The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal is the canal between Amsterdam and Tiel (from the IJ to the Waal). It connects the port of Amsterdam with the Ruhr area (Germany) and is the busiest canal in the world. The canal is 72 kilometers long, 100 to 120 meters wide and 6 meters deep.
In 1931 it was laid down by law that the canal had to be built. However, the crisis and World War II delayed construction. It was not until 21 May 1952 that the canal was opened, by Queen Juliana, over its entire length of 72 kilometres.
