The Rijn en Lek was built in 1659 as a run mill. It is therefore a very early example of the round stone upper porter and is therefore very unique as a building. What is also very special is that the mill is the only mill in the Netherlands to be built on an old city gate. This is the so-called Leuterpoort which dates from the fourteenth century. The mill was later used as a flour mill and has remained so ever since. The mill has been restored several times and has survived several storm disasters, during which the mill could barely be brought to a standstill. For sifting the flour into flour, there is a knocking bump available. The current owner is the Vereniging De Hollandsche Molen. A few volunteer millers run the mill every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon and grind grain on wind power.
