MARKEN

Source: https://boardingcallblog.co...

In the thirteenth century, Marken was separated from the mainland during storms. There followed a period of centuries of isolation for the inhabitants, who lived from fishing. It was not until 1957 that Marken was connected to the mainland by a dike and has been a peninsula ever since.
To protect against flooding, the inhabitants built their characteristic (green) wooden houses on mounds until the seventeenth century, which they themselves called 'yards'. After that, the houses were built on stilts.
After the construction of the Afsluitdijk (1932), the island no longer suffers from flooding, but the typical houses have remained.
