The Red Cottage
Molin filming sites. The Lars Molin Society shows you where it happened.
This is the red cottage the Blomgren family rented from the widow Väster.
At the beginning of Badjävlar, the Blomgrens come cycling along Telegrafgatan and turns into Västergatan, where the house stands. They were promised they could buy the house, but the widow changed her mind and sold it for a good amount to a manager from Stockholm instead. Ulla, who refuses to let people push her around like that, announces, “They’ll have to evict us and carry out the furniture like they used to do to factory employees” – which they also do.
The introductory song from Bengt Sändh and Finn Zetterholm says much about what follows later in the film.
The real-estate agent who shows the “charming little house” to the manager points out that it’s a good buy, as only the land will be worth money in a few years. And “if you’re a little frugal, you can subdivide that as well.”
In Badjävlar, Lars Molin early on illuminated a problem that is a recurring dilemma even today. On the one hand, people want a town that attracts tourists and summer vacationers, but on the other hand people want to be able to afford to remain where they are.
