De Moeren is an old estate with forest, meadow, fields, fens, pools and a country house. Between the forest plots are meadows and fields that Natuurmonumenten manages. No fertilizers and pesticides are used here. Field herbs such as lion's claw, poppy and cornflower grow there. On the flowery grasslands, real cuckoo flower and centaury bloom. In the old, tall trees along the arable land, songbirds such as fitis and oriole breed. In the forest and the hedgerows there are hare, roe deer and pheasant.
Important work
Natuurmonumenten has done important work in De Moeren. Until recently, the transitions from forest to pasture were quite abrupt. Our foresters have cut down inlets in the forest edge where shrubs and plants now grow. Small mammals, birds and butterflies benefit from these gradual transitions. We also dug pools where green and brown frogs and the alpine water salamander now live.
