History
Cies Islands were inhabited by different communities, were first the Romans, then in the Middle Ages were inhabited by monks of various orders. In the early eleventh century Benedictine foundation laid, then left and returned in the late thirteenth century.
In the fourteenth century were the Franciscans who occupied the islands. In these various occupations of the islands are proof monasteries of St. Stephen in the Ilha do Faro and San Martino on the island its name. In the mid-nineteenth century built the first lighthouse on the island do Middle subsequently called Ilha do Faro. On this date back to the islands and be populated by some families who were engaged in fishing and farming.
In the 60 twentieth century the islands were abandoned again, this time for good, so that later in the 70 and 80 begin to be off target for young people in the area. Currently only occupied by the park services, camping and restaurant and access is restricted to a maximum of 2,200 people a day.
