The hill near the village of Varos is created by volcanic ashes and bombs, coming from an eruption of about 20 million year ago. You can clearly see a mixture of bigger volcanic bombs in a matrix of smaller volcanic ashes. This type of rock is called pyroclastic rock. It covered the now petrified forest of this area, of which you can find remain in this area.
