The land on which this house and its rear orchard are located, one of the few green spaces within Malpica’s urban area, belonged to the family of the brigadier Varela Limia. This place is known among the locals as Huerta de Don Pepito (Don Pepito’s orchard).
In his role as Director of Civil Engineering works, military engineer Manuel Varela Limia (Malpica de Bergantiños, 1796 - Madrid, 1853), promoted Spain’s first national network of optical telegraphy. He participated in the defense of the Constitution of 1812 in the Battle of Trocadero, which put an end to the Liberal Triennium (1820-1823), and in the First Carlist War.
In the field of politics, Varela Limia was a senator representing Lugo. As an intellectual, he wrote several books on history and mathematics, as well as numerous writings on the administration and organization of the State and Army, of great significance a the time.
