El Raval ha sido, desde casi el inicio de la historia de Barcelona, un espacio destinado a acoger instituciones caritativas y sanitarias. Desde el establecimiento dentro de su perímetro del Hospital de Santa Cruz, las diferentes instituciones que se han instalado allí han ido dando caracter al barrio hasta bien entrado el siglo XX, cuando las nuevas corrientes higienistas postularon la conveniencia de trasladar los servicios sanitarios y caritativos a las zonas exteriores de la ciudad. “Sanidad en el Raval: una historia de más de 500 años” seguirá las trazas de una larga historia sanitaria en el barrio a través de sus edificios -empezando en el siglo XII en el antiguo Hospital de San Lázaro y acabando en el siglo XX en un dispensario anti-tuberculoso- y de sus protagonistas: leprosos, pobres, huérfanos, prostitutas, orados, epilépticos, impedidos, anormales, tuberculosos, desvalidos...
