El Gorstiense es el sexto piso del Silúrico, en la era Paleozoico. Esta subdivisión es la más antigua del Ludlow y se extiende desde 427,4 ± 0,5 à 425,6 ± 0,9 millones de años. Este piso es precedido por el Homeriense y seguido por el Ludfordiense.[2]
La sección y punto de estratotipo de límite global , que define el límite entre Gorstiense y el piso inferior, Homeriense , se encuentra a 4,5 km al suroeste de Ludlow , en la carrera de plantaciones forestales de Pitch.[3] El PSM es la base de la Formación Baja Elton. En el estratotipo, el límite inferior del piso está 3 cm por debajo del nivel de primera aparición del graptolito Saetograptus varians.[4][5]
