Castle De Cannenburgh

Source: Groenehartstocht

The castle is built on the remains of an earlier castle, the earliest mention of which dates back to 1365. Traces of this former fortified house can still be seen in the basement of the current castle. In 1543 De Cannenburgh became the property of Marshal Maarten van Rossum. He had the ruins rebuilt into a stately castle, introducing the Renaissance style to Gelderland. However, he died in 1555, before the castle was finished. His successor, Hendrik van Isendoorn, completed the building.
After the death on 5 June 1881 Charlotte Theodora Maria Alexandrina baroness van Oldeneel tot Oldenzeel, she was the widow of Fredericus Carolus Theodorus van Isendoorn à Blois, the last descendant of the D'Isendoorn à Blois family, the entire household effects were transferred elsewhere by the heirs. Her possessions were divided among the family members. The castle was in danger of being demolished, but could be sold to Edward, Baron of Lynden. The last private owner was German painter Richard Cleve. After the war, the castle was confiscated by the Dutch State, after which it was sold in 1951 for a symbolic amount to the Friends of Geldersche Kasteelen Foundation. Between 1975 and 1981, the castle was restored and, with the help of various donations, redecorated. In 2006, the foundation was able to buy back a large part of the contents at an auction in Brussels. These included silverware, horse blankets, pieces of furniture and a family banner from 1759.
