Durbuy est situé dans le calcaire bien connu du calcaire dévonien. L’ourlet calcaire est une bande étroite au sud de la Fagne-Famenne et se compose presque exclusivement de calcaire du Dévonien supérieur. C’est comme une marche d’escalier pour les Ardennes. Il est beaucoup plus élevé que la dépression Fagne-Famenne. Les rivières des Ardennes, et qui traversent cette région, donnent naissance à des phénomènes de solution spectaculaires. En géologie, ces phénomènes de solution sont appelés karst.
