Dès 1886, 'Mère pleurant son enfant mort' permet de sortir du ‘document’ réaliste tel que le pratique un Constantin Meunier dans des oeuvres comme 'Le Coup de grisou'. La douleur n’est pas tributaire d’un événement. Elle constitue le coeur d’une condition humaine vouée au désespoir.
L’angoisse existentielle investit l’oeuvre. Elle guide le travail de la silhouette à partir du bloc originel qui tantôt avale la tête de la femme, tantôt la rejette en un geste de révolte tragique.
La recherche n’est pas sociale. Elle participe d’une vision psychologique qui conduit Minne à explorer la vie intérieure à travers un nombre restreint de figures déclinées à l’infini.
