Here in Belgium, the native crayfish is the “Noble Crayfish” (Astacus astacus), and it is not faring well!
It has disappeared from most water courses pushed out by others.
Pollution of waterways, modification and development of the shores, overfishing, and especially the appearance of the Crayfish plague, contributed to the virtual disappearance of populations of our Noble Crayfish. Also affected are the “white-clawed crayfish” and “stone crayfish” elsewhere in Europe.
However, there still exists in some remote places in the Ardennes, a few diehards, who resist the invasion somehow. They don't eat wild boar (like Asterix or Obelix) and do not (yet) carve standing stones but are strictly monitored and protected by the ASPEI (Association for the Protection and Promotion of the native crayfish) of Theux and some enthusiasts in the Walloon Region.
