Aventicum, capitale de la Cité des Helvètes, se situe au cœur du plateau suisse, entre le massif des Alpes et la chaîne du jura. Implantée au bord du lac de Morat dans la région dite des Trois-Lacs, la ville bénéficie d'un emplacement stratégique à proximité de réseaux fluviaux et routiers importants - notamment avec un couloir naturel de circulation reliant le lac Léman à Vindonissa et Augusta Raurica.
Du Ier au IIIe siècle, il s’agissait de la plus grande ville sur le territoire suisse, comptant plus de 20 000 habitants. De nombreux vestiges des différentes recherches archéologiques effectuées jusqu’à ce jour sont exposés au musée romain, situé dans la tour de l’amphithéâtre romain d’Avenches. Parmi ceux-ci, un orgue hydraulique antique à peu près complet et surtout le fameux buste en or de Marc Aurèle, réalisé autour de 180 apr. J.-C., découvert dans les égouts d'un temple en 1939.
