Perhaps the most famous Brussels painter of the 20th century. There are actually two museums dedicated to him in our capital, the other being on the Place Royale. His most famous work is undoubtedly La Trahison des Images (1928-29) or The Treachery of the Images, with the painted text 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe' underneath the very realistic depiction of a pipe. His aim was to remind himself and the viewer that this is a canvas painted with oil paint and not a real pipe. The reference to a pipe 'betrays' the fact that the pipe is an idea that exists only in our heads. Someone who does not know what a pipe is will see a canvas painted with oil, but not a pipe.
