The Pineios River is famous in the Greek mythology. It was one of Heracles tasks to clean the Augean Stables. Heracles succeeded by rerouting the rivers Alpheus and Peneios to wash out the filth. In ancient times, the river passed east of what is now Staphidokampos, the Andravida Military Airport, Lechaina, and the former wetlands, now drained for agricultural purposes, near Agios Panteleimonas.
