Il comune conta una superficie di 233,67 km², classificandosi all'85º posto tra i comuni d'Italia più estesi, e un'altitudine di 364 m s.l.m.
Pisticci sorge a 364 m s.l.m. nella parte centro-meridionale della provincia e si estende tra i fiumi Basento, ad est, e Cavone, a ovest, che separano il territorio pisticcese rispettivamente dai comuni di Bernalda e Montalbano Jonico .
Sempre ad est si affaccia sul Mar Jonio e confina ancora con i comuni di Craco , Ferrandina , Pomarico e Scanzano Jonico .
Pisticci è composto da diverse frazioni e borghi, le più rilevanti sono Casinello, Centro Agricolo, Marconia, Pisticci Scalo, Tinchi e Marina di Pisticci.
