De Mortelen is een laag gebied ten noorden van de Midden-Brabantse dekzandrug. In contrast met de dekzandrug zit hier veel leem in de bodem. Het is ene typisch kwelgebied. Kwel is grondwater dat onder druk uit de grond komt. Dit gebied was te drassig om intensief bewoond te worden. Ook heden treft men er nog weinig bewoning aan. Je vindt er wel tal van bossen en weilanden.
